Chapter History:

Like most rug hooking groups, Natchez Trace Rug Hookers began with just a handful of ladies interested in learning the art of making hand hooked rugs.  Founder, Bette Bryant, had lived in Texas where rug hooking was prevalent.  There were accomplished teachers, rug camps on a regular basis, wool shops where supplies are available and the wool was beautiful.  After coming home to Tennessee, there were no rug camps, no wool, no rug hookers.  Her Texas friends said “Start your own group”.  And so it began in 2006.

After a few months, the group outgrew Bette’s living room and began meeting at a small church nearby in Nashville, TN.  One Sunday, the minister announced that the hookers would be meeting after church!  Seeing quite a few raised eyebrows, our rug group decided we needed a name!  That little church is located near the beautiful world-famous span of free-standing bridge on the Natchez Trace Parkway, so the rug group became Natchez Trace Rug Hookers.  We continue to meet in that small church and are proud to be the first ATHA chapter in Tennessee.
